AZ may be a single data center in the region, but it can also be a group of multiple datacenters.
Each region has at least 2 availability zones. They are fully isolated between each other, connected with high-speed redundant network.
With AZ you can isolate infrastructure inside a region to increase fault tolerance of the system.
